Meet Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust

Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust is the main organization that looks after the interests of our iwi. Think of us as the parent company that manages different businesses and investments to help our people thrive.

We work through several smaller companies that each have their own special job. This helps us spread our investments and reduce risks.

How We’re Organized

Our trust works like a family tree of businesses. At the top is Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust, and below are different companies that handle different types of work.

Land Holdings

CNI Iwi Holdings Limited

  • We own 12.55% of this company
  • This company owns 176,000 hectares of CNI Lands
  • It also holds 3 million carbon credits (NZUs)
  • This company owns 176,000 hectares of CNI Lands

Why this matters: These are traditional lands that help fight climate change and provide income

Hauto Rangipo Whenua Limited

  • Through Tūwharetoa Carbon Farms Ltd, we own 19.7%
  • This company owns 9,000 hectares of Hautu, Rangipo, and Mangamawhitiwhiti lands

Why this matters: More traditional land that stays in iwi hands

Investment Funds

Tūwharetoa Limited

  • This is our main investment company
  • It holds our investment portfolios

Why this matters: Professional investment management grows our wealth

Te Puia Tapapa Limited Partnership

  • Through Tūwharetoa Hau Rau Limited Partnership, we own 18.0%
  • This investment fund includes 25 other iwi groups
  • Made up of 10 Tūwharetoa commercial entities

Tourism & Recreation

Mt Ruapehu Sky Waka Gondola

  • Through Tūwharetoa Gondola Limited Partnership, we invested $9.5 million in bonds
  • This partnership includes 8 different Tūwharetoa businesses

  • Through Te Kakano Limited Partnership, we own 3.1%
  • This company has the rights to harvest trees in Kaingaroa Forest

He Iwi Kainga is the Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust's housing strategy, set up in 2019 to help with the housing needs of Ngāti Tūwharetoa whanau.
